Culture Syndicates have collaborated with Museum Development Yorkshire (MDY) to pilot micro-internships in museums across Yorkshire. The micro-internships are designed to tackle collections management projects, with a particular focus on underused or inaccessible museum objects and rationalisation. The project has brought together NPO and non-NPO museums across Yorkshire to facilitate peer to peer support under the guidance of Culture Syndicates and MDY.
Drawing on our experience of the Resilience Syndicate internship project, Culture Syndicates delivered the first Sharing Day of the project, which enabled the participating museums to develop their plans and confidence for recruiting interns and running the micro-internships.
During the next phase of the project, Culture Syndicates will deliver a Development Programme for the interns and provide one-to-one intern support. We will also evaluate the pilot following a second Sharing Day in 2019; our findings will inform future options and funding bids for the project.
The project will ultimately improve relationships with local colleges, allowing for more sustainable recruitment of interns and volunteers and potential future audience development. Our work will also contribute to workforce diversity, as non-NPO museums develop their confidence of recruiting diversely and NPOs contribute to Arts Council expectations.
